Will the IRS Visit Your Home Without Notice?

Written by Diane Kennedy, CPA on August 25, 2023

Can the IRS visit your home without notice? Yes. But will they? Most likely not. The IRS is changing a long-standing strategy. Here’s why.

The IRS has recently announced that the IRS will be stopping unannounced visits into taxpayer’s homes. In the past, this occurred when taxpayers had large delinquent tax debt. The IRS would try to resolve the matter through mail, but after a certain time period, they just showed up.

Lately, that’s become dangerous for agents and taxpayers don’t know if the agents are truly IRS or it’s some elaborate scam.

So it’s ineffective at best and deadly at worst.

Revenue agents will now send out a letter to schedule a face-to-face meeting. There is no word on what happens if that letter is ignored like the previous notices.
